Guanajuato, Mexico -- Most Violent City in the World
On Televisa's morning new show, it was reported that the frontera city, La Cuidad Juarez, is the most violent city in the world.
I have been to Juarez several times. I walked across the border from its sister city, El Paso, Texas and spent the day shopping and eating at several street kiosks.
The "rules" then were to stay within the crowded streets and not take one of the deserted side streets as a shortcut. Another rule was to make sure you were back across the border long before nightfall. If caught in town when darkness approached you were suppose to get to a hotel and hole up until morning.
That was in 2001-2002.
Now, I cannot begin to imagine how to walk through the shopping district without being confronted on the street in broad daylight much less after dark.
It is interesting to note that Mexicans here in Guanajuato rarely, if ever, refer to Cuidad Juarez by name. They always call it, "La Frontera", in a sort of pejorative snarl and hissing.
